Helio Gracie–patriarch of the legendary Gracie MMA family–died earlier this year in Rio De Janeiro at age 95. This prompted the creation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), frequently called Gracie Jiu Jitsu in his honor.

Gracie also had a professional fighting career of his own, taking on champions from other fighting disciplines in an early version of modern MMA. These bouts were arduous, unregulated affairs with arbitrary rules and no time limits. By his own recollection, Gracie fought 15 times against the top opponents of his time. He began his career in’32 by submitting professional boxer Antonio Portugal in just 32 seconds. Later that year, he fought American catch wrestler Frank Ebert to a draw after the ringside doctor ordered the bout stopped after an ungodly fourteen ten minute rounds.

His most famous battle was against Japanese judo legend Masahiko Kimura, resulting in a rare loss for Gracie. Despite the setback, he fought bravely and may have actually enhanced his legend after refusing to submit to a reverse arm bar (the same modern MMA submission that now bears Kimuras name). Only after his arm was broken did his brother Carlos throw in the towel.

Gracies influence on the Brazilian sports scene, and later the nascent sport of mixed martial arts, would continue through his family. Married twice, he had seven sons (Rickson, Royler, Rolker, Royce, Relson, Robin and Rorion) and two daughters (Rerika and Ricci), many of whom went on to make their own mark on the fight sport world. Terminator 2 – Judgment Day is one of the best action/sci-fi movies that has ever been put to screen. Though it may not seem like it has much to say about the human condition, it actually has a few things to say. Add to that a little bit of campy dialog and action and some wonderful cinematography and you are left with a very charming movie.

The story takes a small group of people, the Conners and the original Terminator, and pits them against a much more powerful force. The T-1000 is as indestructible to the original Terminator as he was to the Conners when he first showed up in the first movie.

The heroes in the story are trying to stop a global Armageddon that is going to have the machines taking over the world. There is a thought that occurs to Sarah about halfway through the movie that she is going to be able to stop this impending doom of the human race. We find out in the next movie that, though they seem to succeed in this movie, they only managed to move the date back of this take over.

A large part of this movie deals with aspects of fate and destiny. People can change the future, things don’t have to be the way they were going to be. It can be changed. This is a message that could be applied to some things that people are talking about in our current political climate. Environmentalists could take that message and say “we don’t have to destroy the planet. We can still save it. We can make a difference.”

There are other issues at play here as well. Sarah Conner is in a mental institute at the beginning of the movie. This could be seen as a sort of discussion on the state of mental health care in America. Though her story does seem very crazy, and she has become quite a violent woman, she actually isn’t crazy. The audience knows that.

Everyone treats her like she is nuts. The filmmakers may be trying to say that this is part of the problem with our system. If someone says something that seems outlandish, it must be mental illness. Granted what she was saying did seem very crazy, and maybe they were trying to point out how hard it was to be Sarah Conner and not really saying anything bad about our health care system, but it seems fair that it could be saying something about both.

John Conner is supposed to be the great savior of mankind when he grows up. Yet at the time of this movie he is just a kid who has had a bizarre upbringing and is starting to get into a life of crime (stealing from ATM machines). John doesn’t actually know that what his mom has told him is true anymore than the mental health professionals think its true.

Strangely, without those robots showing up in Terminator 2 – Judgment day, there would be a very different story. Instead of a story rife with adventure and excitement, it would be a story of a boy being raised by a crazy woman who is teaching him to be a militant. There would be a lot of issues that could follow this, but with the Terminators showing up it ends up being a story that is more action than a sad story of modern day life for a broken family.
